Sainsbury's claim to be market leaders in free range and organic eggs, with sales overtaking standard egg sales for the first time. However they are noticing that demand for organic eggs is rising more slowly than for free range.
In the last year to April, free range sales were up by a third while organic rose only by 6.8%. Standard egg sales dropped by 6.2%.
According to Tessa Lendon, dairy trading manager, this is the result of a concerted effort to direct customers into free range and organic. The company's 'Free Range Woodland' eggs are proving to be even more successful with sales of almost £30,000 per week within the first few weeks of its launch. The eggs are now on sale in 300 stores and likely to be extended to others.
