Beckett promises sustainable development strategy 6 Feb 2003: Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett announced the government's intention to develop a new strategy for sustainable consumption and production (SCP), to minimise the UK's use of natural resources.
At a conference on business and society, sponsored by the Guardian and the Observer, Ms Beckett called for a "fundamental shift in the way businesses operate" to cut waste, reduce consumption and limit the damage the UK inflicts on the environment.
The strategy, to be developed over the coming months, aims to provide a clear and concise statement of the Government's aims and objectives on taking forward the SCP agenda.
